わがリファレンス・システム（アナログ編-その2 プレーヤーを修理する） ― 2014/01/27 11:24
2011年ごろからリファレンス・システムのアナログがめっきり調子を落とし、実用に耐えなくなってきました。レコードの外周は何も問題ないのですが、内周へ近づくに連れ歪みが劇的に増加し、聴くに堪えなくなってしまったのです。もともとアナログは多かれ少なかれ内周は音質が劣化するものですが、とてもそういうレベルではありません。これは明らかにどこかが故障している、という音です。
さぁそこから故障箇所の特定までが大変でした。まずカートリッジを交換してダメ、シェルリードを交換してダメ、シェルを交換してダメ、フォノケーブルを交換してダメ、とここまでは交換した製品の調子は全く問題なしでした。
ならばフォノイコライザーか、とプリアンプのパイオニアC-AX10を修理に出し、その間にいろいろなメーカーのフォノイコを借りました。それぞれに魅力的な音を聴かせてくれるのですが、やはり音の傾向は違うといえ、内周のひどい歪みはいくらか軽減したかな、といった具合です。C-AX10もいくらか劣化は進行していたようですが、主因というわけではなかったようですね。
ならばと片っ端から接点という接点を磨きまくってみましたが、音質は大きく向上したものの内周の歪みは「いくらか良くなったかな」という程度。仕舞いにはパワーアンプからスピーカーまで交換してみましたが、やっぱり大きな向上は見込めず。

すぐに修理工房の手配をつけてくれ、「修理ついでに取材もさせて下さいよ」という願いを鈴畑さんが聞き入れてくれたもので、カメラ片手に工房まで行ってきました。
わが家と同県内といっても埼玉は東西にやたらと広く、車で2時間以上かかって工房へ到着、出迎えて下さったのはご主人の吉崎治さんでした。工房の中にはちょうど地方からの依頼で修理に入ったばかりというRCAの巨大なコンソール型プレーヤーをはじめとする修理を待つ機器が並んでいます。修理の難しいことで有名なQRKなど、往年の名器がいくつも展示されていますが、これらは当然すべて吉崎さんが手を入れてコンディションを整えられた製品だそうです。
あらかじめ電話で症状を伝えてはありましたが、改めて現物を診てもらうと、幸いなことに吉崎さんはPL-70についてよく知悉されているそうで、「それじゃ早速見てみましょう」ということになりました。
工房へ着いて早速まず症状を聴いてもらう。「確かに歪んでますね。調べてみましょう」
まず「アームの先端が上を向いている」件は、先のエントリで書きましたがアームを見るや否や「あぁ、これはパイプが曲がっているんですよ。古いプレーヤーにはよくあることです」と一言。適当な台座をかませてあっという間にほぼ水平レベルへ曲げ直してくれました。
アームパイプは下に台座を置いてタオルを敷き、絶妙の手加減でほぼ水平に曲げ直してくれた。「やりすぎちゃったら元も子もないですからね、これくらいにしときましょう」と吉崎さん。
ついでにインシュレーターが1個固着している件も伝えたら、「それも心当たりがありますよ」と当該の1個を外し、何やら取り付けネジの近辺をちょいちょいと削ったと思ったら、見事ごく普通にインシュレーターが働くようになりました。ごく小さなバリが引っかかってインシュレーターの動きを止めてしまっていたそうです。やれやれ、25年も何を苦労していたのやら。
いよいよ本題、内周の歪みです。まずアームを取り外し、吉崎さんの手持ちのパーツの中から何とか具合の合いそうなデンオンのアームを仮付けして音を聴いてみます。そうしたら内周までほとんどノイズレスに音が出るじゃないですか。これはアームの不調だな、と要因が特定できました。

個人的に、PL-70は外径20cmもあろうかという巨大なDDモーターを搭載しており、そこからノイズが漏れ出してカートリッジへ影響を与え、歪みが増えている可能性を何よりも危惧していました。モーターだとまずパーツ交換は不可能でしょうからね。しかし、アームなら何とかなりそうです。心の底からホッとしました。
吉崎さんは外したアームを持ってゆらゆらとサポート部分を動かしてみられます。どうやら特に左右方向のベアリングが渋くなっているようだ、とのこと。後で原因を伺ったら、このアームはオイルダンプ式なんですが、そのダンピング用オイルがサポートのベアリングへ垂れて粘らせていたのではないかということでした。
サポート部分を持ってアームを揺らし、ベアリングの潤滑を確かめる吉崎さん。「特に左右方向が粘っているようですね」
もちろん私はこのアームがオイルダンプだと知っていましたし、横にすることはおろか、僅かに傾けたことすらありません。フォノケーブルを交換する際にも細心の注意でまっすぐにしていたつもりです。また、ご存じの通りダンピング用のオイルは大変に粘度が高く、水飴のようなものです。ほんの2～3分傾けたくらいでこぼれるようなものではありません。
しかし、長年このプレーヤーを使ってきて、こういう音質劣化をきたすようになったのはごくここ1～2年でした。ということはつまり、20年以上も前に何らかの手荒な扱いで漏れたダンピング・オイルが少しずつ滴下し、2011年になってサポートのベアリングへたどり着いた、ということしか考えられません。ずいぶん長くかかって炸裂した時限爆弾だったというほかありませんね。
「このアームならよく知っているし、分解清掃とグリスアップをしましょう」ということになりました。そこまでやってもらうのならと、ついでに内部配線も新しいものに替え、またダンピング・オイルが劣化して粘度が恐ろしく高まっていたのでそこも清掃、適正な粘度のオイルをバスに満たしてもらいました。
固化してオイルバスにこびりついたダンピング・オイル。適正粘度の新しいオイルに交換してもらったが、古いオイルを掻き出して清掃するのが大変だったとか。
いったんプレーヤーを預け、数日後「できましたよ」という電話をもらったので再び車で工房へ向かいます。修理の成ったPL-70は細かな汚れやホコリも拭い落とされ、ピカピカになっていました。
工房の装置で音出しをしてみると、内周まで歪みらしきものは全く看取できません。万歳、わが愛器が完全によみがえりました。いや、正確に言うなら「買った時よりずっといいコンディションに生まれ変わった」というべきですね。アームはまっすぐだしインシュレーターは動くし。
恐るおそる「で、おいくらですか？」と聞いてびっくり！ 具体的な金額を書くのは差し障りもあるので控えますが、覚悟していた金額の半額以下でした。今の日本じゃビギナー向けのプレーヤー（ミニコンポ用みたいなのは除きますけどね）もおいそれとは買えないほどの格安料金です。
また、吉崎さんは大変な波乱万丈の人生を歩んでこられた人で、その一代記を伺うだけで何時間も楽しく過ごすことのできる人でした。また語り口が実に巧みで面白く、ついついお仕事の邪魔をして何時間も居座ってしまいました。また何か修理をお願いすることがあったらぜひ伺いたいものです。
全快したわがPL-70で、ベルドリーム特製のデノンDL-102専用シェルリードを試す。2本しか出ていないDL-102の端子からシェルの4端子へ接続することが可能な"分岐ケーブル"である。アームがしゃっきりとまっすぐ伸びていることがお分かりいただけるだろうか。
この修理が済んでもうすぐ1年になりますが、わがPL-70はいまだ絶好調、これで後継プレーヤーをしばらく心配する必要はなくなりました。35年も前のプレーヤーがいまだこういう商売をしている人間のリファレンス機器として現役というのはいささかからず問題ではあるのですが、貧乏ライターの情けない行状とご寛恕いただけると幸いであります。
